Food & Farming Student Day
The first Student Food and Farming Day jointly run by the Suffolk Agricultural Association, Otley College, the Suffolk Education Business Partnership Ltd and Hollow Trees Farm, was hailed an outstanding success by the organisers.
Education Officer Hannah Woods from the SAA said the comments and feedback they had received from both teachers and the 13-16year old pupils was very positive and confirmed that they had been very receptive to the day and understood many of the key messages.
“Many agreed that through the tasting opportunities and chance to see the food and farming processes and all that is involved in production at first hand had brought agriculture alive, “she said. “The food technology students said they found it particularly helpful and the host companies manning the various “stations” clearly were providing just the right level of information that the students required.”
“Two follow-up visits to of the host companies were arranged on the day as well as links created for follow-up work in the classroom,” said Hannah, ”which is really encouraging.”
“Students eyes were opened to the diverse range of career opportunities within the agricultural industry from chemists to engineers and marketers. The day also served as an excellent taster for any pupils wanting to pursue The Environment and Land-based Diploma, one of a range of new qualifications targeting 14-19 year-olds.”
Each student was given a packed lunch in a recyclable bag containing a flier giving details of the contents, most of which was locally produced and gave the breakdown of food miles contained in the lunch.
Organisers are hoping to run at least one similar event next year so any teachers or potential sponsors wishing to reach young people in this stage of their education should call Hannah on 01473 707118.
