Music is the theme for this year's Flower Arrangement Competition
PRESS INFORMATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 2010
Flower arrangements to strike the right note at the Suffolk Show
It was Rudyard Kipling who wrote:” Flowers are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful’ and sitting in the shade,” so let music be your inspiration to enter the Suffolk Show’s Flower Arrangement Competition this year.
Stewards, headed by Mrs Rosemary Black, have chosen Aspects of Music as the theme for the 14 classes and are hoping the subject will strike just the right chord with all the entrants.
“As we sat discussing the theme for this year’s competition we looked back at the titles we had used over the past 30 years and realised that the whole competition had never been devoted to music. It is such an inspiring and emotional theme which we hope will appeal to all the entrants’ various styles and give them lots of opportunities to demonstrate their creativity,” she said. Class titles range from Floral Symphony to Twist and Shout, Fantasia, The String Section, Concert in the Park as well as the Top of The Charts so there should be one to suit everyone’s taste and style.
New for this year in the restricted classes, of which there are four, is an imposed class for the members of the East Suffolk Junior Club. Sponsored by the East Anglian Wholesale Florist Ltd of Ipswich and W & M Smith of Stowmarket, the class entitled Rhapsody in Blue calls for an arrangement by individuals from the club, who will all be given the same flowers, foliage and accessories with which to create their own individual exhibits rather than the group as a whole, giving the 10-16 year olds more scope to compose their very own arrangement.
Also for the younger arrangers, who must be aged under 17 on June 2, 2010, is Class 14 -Top of the Charts - a craft exhibit of a decorated cover for a CD/DVD. The cover will be supplied on entry and this can be sent in or brought in already completed.
Of the other classes, ebony and ivory, the colours of the keyboard, were the inspiration behind Class 4 Piano Concerto which calls for a striking design in black and white.
Perhaps the view from the dress circle looking into the orchestra pit drummed up the idea for Class 3, the exhibit staged within an enclosed space which should be based on the theme of Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The arrangement should be designed to be looked down on.
As well as prize money of more than £800, there are seven trophies to be presented including one for the Best Exhibit by a Suffolk Young Farmer’s Club member in Class 13 – which is entitled Country and Western.
Entry is open to all ages and closes at 12 noon on Friday April 16, 2010. The exhibits will be staged on Tuesday June 1, 2010, in the Flower and Garden Experience marquee between 12noon and 8.30pm on that day.
