Gardening conference looks back to look forward
‘Looking Back to Look Forward’ is the title of this year’s Suffolk Agricultural Association Gardening Conference on Thursday 10th November 2011 at Trinity Park, Ipswich, which is kindly sponsored by Alitex, NFU Mutual – Ipswich and the Suffolk Gardens Trust.
The British love affair with gardens has been enhanced over time leaving so much to be learnt from the past that sometimes the most influential lessons may not be obvious at first sight. By "Looking Back to Look Forward" the conference speakers will guide delegates through the historical maze to lessons that can be learnt for the future designs of our gardens.
The conference will be introduced by Chairman, Lady Tollemache of Helmingham Hall famed for its Grade 1 listed gardens. Speakers include Edward Martin who has worked as an archaeologist with Suffolk County Council for many years, specialising in historic landscape studies; Caroline Holmes, a Garden Historian; and Kim Wilkie who was responsible for new landforms at Heveningham Hall in Suffolk and Boughton Park in Northamptonshire.
Caroline Holmes from Bury St Edmunds said “I am delighted to once again be asked to speak at the SAA Gardening Conference. My talk will take a walk through garden history tracing the footprints left by Romans and Royals and exploring typical images of English landscapes such as the ‘Cottage Garden’ and Capability Brown’s legacy of grassy parks and majestic trees.”
The conference will feature a SAA Gardeners’ Question time session when delegates will have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel of expert speakers.
The conference will appeal to all gardening enthusiasts, budding garden designers and those that appreciate and enjoy visiting open and public gardens. Designed as a relaxed, sociable and informative day, the event starts at 9.30am with coffee, breaks at midday for a two course hot lunch and rounds off at 3pm with tea, cake and shopping time.
Ticket prices including lunch are £30 for Suffolk Agricultural Association and Suffolk Gardens Trust Members, £35 for non members and £20 for under 30 years. Places are strictly limited.
