Farminanglia
Suffolk's Food & Drink - Miles Closer
The Demonstration area within Farminanglia is an educational area of the Suffolk Show where we try to inform people of what Suffolk farms and the countryside have to offer.
This year the demonstration was about the distance our food and drink has to travel before it reaches our table.
We were delighted that celebrity chef Rachel Green who, earlier this year, appeared on the BBC Show 'Kill it, Cook it, Eat it' ran a cookery demo using all local ingredients.
Exhibitors in the area showed how close to market some of our everyday foods really are; such as Birds Eye Peas, who freeze a large proportion of the Garden Peas from Suffolk and neighbouring Norfolk.
Cattle
Cows are milked on the Showground twice a day in the Farminanglia Dairy, which is maintained by G & J Staines Ltd. Plan a milking session into your day. In Farminanglia you can not only see how cows are milked but also see the calves as well. At the Calf Unit, sponsored by Volac, there are plenty of calves and whilst you are there have a go at hand milking the wooden cow.
Beef production is an important part of British farming. At the Show you can not only see prime beef cows in the Cattle Rings but also within Farminanglia. The beef shed, co-ordinated by Mr K Warne, has plenty of examples.
Pigs
The running commentary around the pig ring makes it not only informative but also entertaining. Do you know what a judge looks for in a prize winning sow? Come along to the Farminanglia area and watch the pedigree and commercial herds being judged.
Inventive Farmer
The Inventive Farmer Competition offers farmers the chance to show off their ideas. Many people working on farms often see ways to do tasks more efficiently. This is achieved through alterations to tools or mechanical objects, or even the invention of a whole new concept.
Entrants can win up to £175. The only criteria is that the invention is by someone whose main occupation is not the design and manufacture of agricultural equipment. No entry will be accepted if it is about to go into production or already in production.
The competition is judged on the first morning of the Show to the following criteria, Originality 60%, Suitability 20%, Labour Saving 20%.
Come along and look at some of Suffolk's Inventive Farmers ideas. Have you got an idea? Why not enter the competition - contact Elizabeth Payne at the Show Office for an entry form.
What's New In Farming Equipment Competition
This is a FREE competition open to all Agricultural and Horticultural exhibitors to find the Best New Piece of Equipment. The product must have been launched during the last year. The entries are judged on the first morning of the Show. Have a wander around the Tradestands and see if you can spot the winner!
To enter your company's product please contact Louise Davey at the Show office.
Children's Farm
The Children's Farm is a very popular part of the Show and is run in conjunction with Easton Farm Park.
You don't have to be young to enjoy the Children's Farm. There is so much to see. The area is designed especially with little people in mind but many big people love it too. There is also a more serious point to the Children's Farm - education. The farm tackles issues like food production using a hands on approach.
